How to apply for a visa
Sweden requires citizens from many countries to have a visa in order to enter the country. It is not always obvious which embassy you should send you application to.
First, please read the
general information
on visas for Sweden.
Check if you are on the list of
foreign citizens who need visa
for entry into Sweden.
If your country is on the list mentioned above, you must apply for a visa as soon as possible. Normally you should send your application to the Swedish embassy in your country, or the one closest to you. Here you can find a list of the
Swedish representations abroad.
When clicking on the link of your country, you may be directed to a Swedish embassy in another country nearby. For example, Sweden does not have an embassy in Venezuela; instead you will be directed to the Swedish embassy in Colombia.
In that case, normally the embassy in the nearby country will be responsible also for visa applications, but not always, so make sure to read the information on the embassy´s web site.
Sometimes the visa applications are handled by the embassy in another country, even if Sweden does have an embassy in your own country. For example, Afghans must apply for visas through the Swedish embassy in Islamabad, Pakistan, and not the Swedish embassy in Kabul.
Furthermore, occasionally another Schengen embassy will handle visa applications for Sweden. For example, visa applications from people in Albania are handled by the Danish Embassy, not the Swedish. Here is a list of these
exceptions.
Please read carefully on the embassy website to make sure which embassy you should send you application to.
